Gifts for a new golfer

Someone just starting needs the basics, and they'll lose plenty of balls along the way. These help without spending a fortune.

Our gift ideas

  1. A package set of clubs

A full beginner's set with a bag, usually far cheaper than buying clubs one by one. Check their height and which hand they play.

From £319 at HotGolf today, one of 7 UK shops we track.

  2. Lake balls

New golfers lose balls. A bag of graded, cleaned lake balls costs a fraction of new ones, so losing them doesn't hurt.

From £9 a dozen at Clubhouse Golf today, one of 3 UK shops we track.

  3. A golf glove

Helps grip and stops blisters. You'll need their size, and which hand (right-handers wear it on the left).

  4. A lightweight stand bag

Light enough to carry, with legs that pop out. Handy if their set didn't come with one.

  5. Putting mat

A cheap way to practise at home and build confidence on the greens.

Buying for a golfer: what to check

Safe bets

Balls, tees, towels, markers, umbrellas and golf tech don't need a size, hand or flex, so they're hard to get wrong.

Gloves and shoes

You'll need their size. Most right-handed golfers wear one glove on their left hand. If in doubt, check the glove in their golf bag.

Clubs

Clubs depend on height, hand and swing speed. Unless you know exactly what they want, a gift card from the shop is safer.

Delivery and returns

Check each shop's last Christmas delivery date and returns window before you buy, and ask for a gift receipt.

Prices change, so check on the shop's site before you buy. Links to shops and Amazon may be affiliate links: if you buy, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never decides what we recommend. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
